Introducing Let’s Farbreng!

The Original Farbrengen

Around 1775, followers of the great Chassidic Rebbe, Rabbi Mendel Haradoker, gathered in Haradok, a small Belarusian town, to learn from their master. Seated around a table, they reviewed one of his teachings and then engaged each other in passionate conversation about it. Vodka was used to wish each other L’chaim! To Life! Niggunim, soulful Chassidic melodies, were sung, and the earliest recorded Farbrengen ensued. At that Farbrengen Rabbi Shheur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of the Chabad movement, famously remarked that a Chassidic Farbrengen could achieve more than the divine angel Michoel (Michael) ever could.

Our Farbrengens

In our home, the Shabbat afternoon meal transforms into a Farbrengen. It starts with the Chein family and visiting alumni gathered around the table, and as the meal progresses, students will often join as well. Frequently, these Farbrengens extend beyond the conclusion of Shabbat, sometimes lasting up to nine hours.

This photo was taken after Shabbat ended.

The Let's Farbreng! Story

Let’s Farbreng! emerged from a paper for M²’s Pedagogies of Wellbeing Research Fellowship, in which Hashliach Rabbi Peretz explored the pedagogy of Farbrengen. The first prototype was created and played on a cardboard box and Rubik’s Cubes with three students who were at the Chabad House for their weekly Torah learning.
